Description: Armored, laterally flattened, oval-shaped cells with small flat or rounded epitheca. Dinophysis acuta and Dinophysis acuminata. For D. acuta, the two lower sides of the Close. Hypotheca. In thecate dinoflagellates, the posterior part of a dinokont cell above the cingulum. The equivalent of a hypocone for naked dinoflagellates. hypotheca have an almost straight edge, meaning that they meet at acute angle and form a fairly sharp tip.

Dinophysis are typically medium-sized cells (30-120 µm). The structural plan and plate tabulation are conserved within the genus. Dinophysis species are armored dinoflagellates in the family Dinophysiaceae and, like other members of the family, have a consistent non-Kofoidian plate tabulation of 18 to 19 plates: four epithecal plates, two apical plates surrounding an apical pore, four cingular plates, four to five sulcal plates, and four hypothecal plates.

Taxonomic Description: Dinophysis norvegica Claparède and Lachmann, 1858-1859 Species Overview: Dinophysis norvegica is an armoured, marine, planktonic dinoflagellate species. This species is a bloom-forming toxic species associated with DSP events. It is commonly found in cold neritic waters. Taxonomic Description: Species in this genus are laterally compressed with a small, cap-like epitheca and a much larger Dinophysis rotundata has been associated with toxicity only in one case, in the Black Sea (Vershnin & Kamnev 2001). However, since D. caudata was also present in the same sample, the species responsible for DSP cannot be ascertained.
I think as of now no one really knows. 2004-04-01
Previous studies indicate differences in bloom magnitude and toxicity between regional populations, and more recently, between geographical isolates of Dinophysis acuminata; however, the factors driving differences in toxicity/toxigenicity between regions/strains have not yet been fully elucidated.
